Introducing "Make Things and Share Them: a weekly newsletter from Sarah Duet"

A preview of next week’s newsletter! Subscribe to receive it in your inbox on Tuesday, January 25.

Hi there,

I hope your new year has started off well enough, even if it doesn’t feel particularly…new. If it does, good for you. If it doesn’t, just know you’re not alone. Which is perhaps the most important thing to know 2 years into a global pandemic when all you’re trying to do is figure out how to keep going. Is anyone doing anything else?

As for me, I’ve just been doing what I usually do when things get tough: making things. Lots of things: blackout poems, collages, paintings, more paintings, some music, and books. And while I’ve shared some of the process along the way, it feels like time to emerge from the studio more consistently. The creative process isn’t just about the making for me; it’s always been completed in the sharing, in the possibility of connection. I make things and share them.

The Newsletter

Well the new year brings with it new opportunities to share! Next Tuesday, January 25, I will send the inaugural issue of MAKE THINGS & SHARE THEM: a weekly newsletter from Sarah Duet directly to your email inbox (if you’d like to receive it). This new weekly offering will include a brief message from me to you—because who can read long emails anymore?—in which I’ll share the following:

  1. One thing I’ve made recently (A poem, a painting, etc.)

  2. Two book recommendations from my brand new bookshop, INPUTS [curated by Sarah Duet]

  3. Three things worth your time and attention this week (Podcasts, music, articles, people, shows, films, etc.)

Subscribers will also be the first to know when new projects are available and receive exclusive discounts as a “thank you” for your presence. It’s not just about what I make and share. I think there are benefits for all of us in creativity, and I hope to encourage you to make things and share them as well! That’s my goal.

Why an email newsletter?

For so many reasons, I want to create a way for us to be in touch that isn’t mediated by social media. An email newsletter is a good way to connect directly, out of the gaze and addictive interface of these corporations. I appreciate the good that these online platforms offer, but it gets harder and harder to abide the harms. Plus, they continue to change their terms and algorithms, which make our communication there more precarious and expensive over time.

*This will be a brand new newsletter community, so even if you’ve received emails from me before, please resubscribe. This will be a fresh start. I’m not going to assume anyone wants to hear from me just because you did the past.

PS-What’s going on with the Enneagram?

I know some of you are curious about the status of my Enneagram work and if there will be any events this year. I’ll likely address that more fully soon, but know that my work with the Enneagram hasn’t stopped. It’s just shifted focus. While I’ve taken a hiatus from my public teaching work during the pandemic, I’ve been working behind the scenes with The Narrative Enneagram since 2019 as a social media manager and design communications specialist. I’m proud of the work we’re doing together and will continue to invest my time there. I may return to public work in this realm, but it remains to be seen what that will look like. Thank you for your interest and patience! And if you’re looking for a new Enneagram book this year, definitely preorder Chichi Agorom’s, The Enneagram for Black Liberation: Return to Who You Are Beneath the Armor You Carry.

Thanks for being here! Hope to see you in your inbox very soon,
